Business records and listings being worked through at a desk

Citation Building

Google is checking whether your story adds up.

An old suite number here, a phone number from two providers ago there, a duplicate listing somebody made in 2019. Individually trivial. Together they make Google slightly less certain you are one real business, and certainty is what the map pack rewards.

The process

Cleanup first, building second

Most citation services sell you volume, because volume is easy to invoice. The bigger win for an established business is almost always in what already exists and disagrees with itself.

01

Audit what exists

Find every listing already out there, including the ones nobody at the business remembers creating. This is where the duplicates, old addresses and dead phone numbers turn up.

02

Agree one canonical version

One exact name, address and phone format, matching the Google Business Profile and the website, down to whether it is Street or St. Everything else is corrected toward it.

03

Clean up the conflicts

Claim, correct or remove the duplicates and outdated records. Slower than creating new listings and usually worth more, because a competing duplicate is actively working against you.

04

Build the shortlist

Listings on the directories that actually matter for your industry and country, submitted with the canonical details, not sprayed across five hundred sites nobody reads.

One part of local prominence

Citations contribute to prominence, which is one of the three things deciding local ranking. They work alongside the Google Business Profile, which is the listing citations are corrected toward, and link acquisition, which builds the same signal from a different direction.

All three sit on the Authority plan in our SEO plans, because they amplify foundations rather than substitute for them.

Questions we get asked

Any mention of your business name, address and phone number on another website. A directory listing, a chamber of commerce page, a trade association register, a supplier's find-a-dealer page. It does not need to link to you to count, which is what makes citations different from backlinks.

Because Google is trying to establish that you are one real business at one real address, and every version that disagrees makes that slightly less certain. A suite number on some listings and not others, an old phone number from before you switched providers, a trading name on half of them. Individually trivial, collectively a drag on how confidently you get shown.

Fewer good ones beat hundreds of junk ones. The directories that actually matter in a given industry and country are a shortlist, not a phone book, and the rest are mostly there to be sold to you in packages of five hundred. We would rather build the shortlist correctly and then clean up what already exists.

Cleanup is usually the bigger win and almost always the uglier job. Most established businesses have accumulated duplicates from a previous owner, an old address, a franchise system or a listing somebody created years ago and forgot. Those actively compete with your real listing, so finding and resolving them often moves things more than adding anything new.

Occasionally, in specific industries where the directory genuinely sends customers. Mostly not. If the only argument for a paid listing is SEO value, it is usually a weak argument, and we will tell you when something you are already paying for is not earning its place.

Because it is slow, manual and only pays off once the profile and the site underneath it are right. Fixing citations for a business whose Google Business Profile has the wrong primary category is solving the second problem first. The earlier plans deal with the profile and the technical foundations.
