Call Tracking and Attribution

Know which half of your marketing is working.

Every number we put in front of a customer is a tracking number, so every call traces back to the campaign that produced it. We hold the CallRail account and give you the login, because a report you cannot check is just a claim.

The problem

Most service businesses cannot tell you where a call came from

Ask a business owner which marketing produced last month's work and the honest answer is usually a guess, often a confident one. The phone rang, the job got booked, and nobody recorded whether the customer found them through an ad, the map pack, a referral or a van they saw parked outside a neighbour's house.

That guess is what agencies build reports on top of. It is also why so much marketing spend survives for years without ever being challenged: if nothing is attributed, nothing can be proven to be failing.

How it works

01

Every channel gets its own number

Google Ads, the website, the Google Business Profile, print, vehicle livery. Each source gets a distinct tracking number so a call can be traced to what produced it rather than guessed at.

02

The call forwards to your real phone

Nothing changes about how you answer. The customer dials the tracking number, it rings your existing line, and the call is logged with its source on the way through.

03

You see the source, not just the total

The dashboard shows which campaign, and often which keyword, produced each call. That is the difference between knowing you got forty calls and knowing which twelve of them came from money you spent.

04

Missed calls become visible

Calls that rang out, went to voicemail or were never returned stop being invisible. For most businesses this is the first time anyone has quantified what the phone going unanswered is costing.

You get your own login

We hold the CallRail account and give you access to it. Not a monthly export, not a screenshot in a slide deck. You can log in whenever you like, see every call as it arrives, listen to the recordings and check which channel produced them.

This is deliberate and it is uncomfortable in the right way. It is considerably harder to present a flattering month when the client can open the call log and count for themselves. That is the entire point.

Included with most of what we do

Call tracking is not sold as an upsell on top of everything else, because without it the rest cannot be judged. It comes included from the Growth plan upward on our SEO plans, and it is part of every Google Ads engagement, because optimising a campaign against clicks rather than calls is optimising against the wrong thing.

Dental practices run HIPAA-compliant configurations from day one, which is covered in more detail on the dental marketing page. For trades and home services, where a missed call at four in the afternoon is a job that goes to a competitor, the missed-call reporting is usually the part that changes behaviour fastest. That is covered on the home services page.

Questions we get asked

Your real business line stays exactly as it is. Tracking numbers are displayed on the website and in ads, and they forward straight through to your existing phone. Customers dial a tracking number, you answer your normal phone, and nothing about how you take calls changes.

It will not, provided it is set up properly. Dynamic number insertion swaps the displayed number for website visitors while your real number stays in the page markup and on your Google Business Profile. The consistency that matters for local search is preserved. Done carelessly it can cause problems, which is the argument for having someone configure it who knows that.

Recording is optional and configurable. Consent requirements vary by state and province, with some requiring all parties to consent, so recording is set up to match the rules where you operate and announcements are used where they are required. If you would rather not record at all, attribution still works without it.

Dental practices run HIPAA-compliant configurations from day one. The number insertion itself does not touch protected health information, since it only swaps a displayed number. Where recordings and storage are involved, those are configured under the compliant setup rather than the default one.

It is the gap between someone contacting you and you responding, and it is usually the difference between winning and losing the job. Tracking makes the gap visible: you can see which calls were missed, which went to voicemail, and how long callbacks actually took. You cannot fix a response time you have never measured.

Tell us and we will transfer the account or export the history for you. The call log is a record of your own customers contacting your own business, and we have no interest in holding it hostage. What we will not pretend is that tracking numbers can be moved without planning, so give us notice and it is straightforward.
